January 2021 ~ Life Sounds Better To Music

January 2021 ~ Life Sounds Better To Music, and here we are needing music even more as we go into a New Year with our plans still overshadowed by that damn virus. I always used to say “I’m a glass half-full kind of guy “- but it’s better than that. Music always tops me up a bit higher. January is always a long had month – this year even more-so. So thank goodness for music and there is so much out there.

Doing the Fuerte Fine Guys Real Beach Party with Gary continues to bring me joy. As I finish this blog post on 31st January show 8 is due to go to air and we are beginning to find some kind of rhythm. If you aren’t listening to the shows PLEASE CLICK HERE to go to our Fuerte Fine Guys page for all the information you need. Please give it a like and tell your friends.

Here are a few tracks that have come across my radar this month.

Cedric Gervais, Franklin feat. Nile Rodgers ~ Everybody Dance

Cedric Gervais has teamed up with the legendary Nile Rodgers and rising talent Franklin to unveil a reworking of the CHIC 1978 iconic dance smash hit ‘Everybody Dance’. The new version includes brand new re-recorded guitar parts from the three-time Grammy award winner and global icon Nile Rodgers. The result is a beacon of positivity: a track that provides a moment of joyous celebration to help bring people together at the end of a bleak year.

London Grammar ~ Lose Your Head

Nottingham 3 piece London Grammar have a new album, ‘Californian Soil’, due on 9th April. I think this is the second single released ahead of that launch, featuring Hannah Reid on vocals “Lose Your Head” is a great return to form.

Shaun Escoffery ~ Days Like These ~ Booker T Kings of Soul Vocal Mix

Shaun Escoffery has a fantastic voice. This track originally comes from 2002. Gary picked this 2021 Booker T Kings of Soul remix for this week’s show. I’ve got to be honest, I wasn’t convinced at first but it’s grown on me. So here is the new version and the original, so let me know which you prefer.

And that dear reader is January 2021 ~ Life Sounds Better To Music. This series is now a year old, so if you are really bored scroll back and see what else “floated my boat” and please let me know your thoughts.

P.S. I’m still taking new bookings for weddings and parties both here in England and in Fuerteventura. Just email paul@thepartydj.co.uk or give me a call on 07973 617153 if you’d like a chat and find out more – cheers!

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ December 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ December 2020… and so the year we will all remember for the wrong reasons comes to a close. It’s been a tough one for everyone, but we made it. As I mentioned last month CLICK HERE, there’s not much new music released in December every year hence this months post is a bit different. Just one new album to mention and then lots of me, me, ME!

Taylor Swift ~ Evermore

That’s right, Taylor Swift released another album, “Evermore”. Her last album “Folklore” came out of the blue at the end of July and just under five months later she’s back again. “Evermore” is her ninth studio album and carries on where “Folklore” finished, collaborating with many of the same writers, musicians and collaborators. It’s a very chilled out reflective album, perfect for winter nights by the fire.

and that’s about it for new music in life sounds better to music in December 2020. now it’s time for me to step up to the mark with Steve and Gary, and give you something else to keep you entertained as most of us find ourselves with more time on our hands. First two radio shows I made with Steve back at the end of 2010. Then two more with Gary from our new venture on Real FM.

Gold Show 61 ~ Christmas Special December 2010

Back to December 2010. Ten years ago the World was a very different place – if you knew then what we know now what would we have done about it? Anyway, Steve and I had been doing our shows for over a year. We decided to do two specials with more music and less rabbit.

Show 61 includes great music from Gary’s Gang, The Crusaders, The Whispers, Sylvester, The Beginning Of The End, Roy Ayres and George Duke, to name just a few. Two hours of top tunes – enjoy.

Gold Show 62 ~ New Years Special December 2010

If anything, this one is even better. Listening to it now I’m proud to have been part of it – Steve assures me I did contribute. I guess having used the tech for a year we were very much “in the zone”.

This show features The Emotions with Earth, Wind & Fire, The Sugarhill Gang, Snap, Jimmy “Bo” Horne, Donna Summer, Azymuth, Congress and many, many more. Two hours of non-stop bangers!

The Fuerte Fine Guys Real Beach Party Show 2

First broadcast on 20th December 2020, Show 2 of my new weekly show with Gary, my Fuerte Fine buddy!

Show 1 was OK, but only just. On this one we are starting to find our feet, there is a lot to get used to. We’re hoping things will get easier (and therefore smoother) over the coming weeks! Featuring The Scissor Sisters, Laid Back, Janet & Luther, Chic, Estelle & Kanye, Peyton & Wayne G, The Beloved, Michael Gray, plus loads more!

The Fuerte Fine Guys Real Beach Party Show 3

Show 3 … I didn’t mention this before but, at the moment, I’m in Hampshire and Gary is in Fuerteventura. We are trying to do our best to create a weekly show without the benefit of actually hanging out together. There is a lot to learn. We have to find “ways around” some of the process – but I think we are getting there. The other guys on the station have been really helpful and it’s nice to feel part of something again.

Please give it a listen and let me know what you think. We have a new FaceBook page, CLICK HERE. There you can find more about the shows and send us requests. We do a weekly birthdays feature, so please get in touch.

This week we played Fleetwood Mac, The Shapeshifters featuring Billy Porter, Patrice Rushen, Odyssey, Mamas Gun, and Arcade Fire! Plus plenty more that you will know and a few you may not!

And that, dear reader, is that. Where would be without music? It was a huge part of 2020 for me, just as it has been for every year of my life. Wherever you are, whatever is happening in your World, I wish you all the best for 2012. Never forget, life sounds better to music, December 2020.

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ July 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ September 2020

Another month of madness. In fairness, I don’t have much to complain about but September 2020 has been a tough month again for many people all over the world. At least there has been more great new tunes to enjoy, Life Sounds Better To Music ~ September 2020.

Chanelle & Eric Kupper ~ One Man (Michael Gray Remix)

A rework of one of my favourite floor-fillers from 1989, this is my tune of the month – THIS is something to smile about!
The original version was produced by Blaze, this time Eric Kupper is in that role remaining true to the original but giving it a fabulous fresh feel. Put on your dancing shoes and leave your troubles behind for over 5 minutes of pure joy.

Lovers & Poets ~ Follow You Follow Me

Lovers and Poets are husband-and-wife team of Shannon Hurley and Ben Eisen. I featured their track “Nevergonnastop” back in April (please click here). Now they’re back again, this time with a chilled out Genesis cover!!!

“Follow You Follow Me” was a hit for Phil Collins and Co in 1978. In this version, Shannon sounds a little like Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys to me. To find out more about Lovers And Poets CLICK HERE.

Show Me Love (Cafe del Mar Edit)

The formula is simple, take one of the biggest dance anthems of the last 30 years and make a Cafe del Mar styled chill-out version. This one absolutely nails it.

Based on the 1990 Robin S song that was a hit in many different versions in the UK in 1993, 1997, 2009 and 2015, I don’t think it’s likely to chart in this version but I love it. It’s one of the stand-out tracks on this year’s official Cafe del Mar album Volume 26.

Sigala ft James Arthur ~ Lasting Lover

Right from the start, with very clever use of a sample of the hook from of MGMT’s 2008 hit ‘Time to Pretend’, this is a late summer smash. Actually written by Lewis Capaldi, the song features James Arthur on vocals fusing perfectly with Sigala’s dance beats and melody and the MGMT sample.

Alicia Keys ~ Love Looks Better

In fairness I could have taken most of the tracks from the new Alicia Keys album (“Alicia”). This is her seventh studio album and was due out earlier in the year but delayed because of … well, you know. Lots of the tracks were therefore already available but the whole album was released on 10th September and I had it on repeat for many of my walks in the final days of the month.

Here’s a bonus for you, another track from the album, “Underdog” recorded for The Late Late Show with James Corden

WOW! Life sounds better to music ~ September 2020, maybe it wasn’t such a bad month after all. See you soon.

What's next for weddings

What’s next for weddings? – September 2020

Well, my previous prediction CLICK HERE that the Government might ease the restrictions on weddings has now been proved wrong. Rather than be increased, it’s been halved from 30 to 15. The Prime Minister also said these new rules could be in place for 6 months. This will take us through to the end of March next year.

The only good news is that the 15 now doesn’t include the registrars/minister, previously everyone was included. Now it’s the couple and 13 guests. The latest rules also permit the first dance, but no other dancing and no music louder than in the background.

So, what’s next for weddings? First, it’s worth acknowledging there is a lot of hurt out there. Many of my 2020 couples have already rescheduled their wedding twice and now they are faced with another date change. Please spare a thought for the venues and suppliers, many of them are really struggling and the Government hasn’t given them the support they’ve offered to other sectors.  Fortunately for my couples, I’ve got this under control and because of the way I operate I’ve been able to reschedule every date so far.

In my view, couples should try and stay calm and be realistic. As I’ve said before, finding someone you want to spend the rest of your life with is a fantastic thing, you are very lucky. Making plans is still an option, having things to look forward to, for me, is a vital part of life. What better to look forward to than a wedding.

What’s next for weddings – Hitched Survey

What’s everyone else doing? Well, according to Hitched, who carried out a survey with 400 couples, 95% of couples are not going to cancel their weddings. Instead, 71% are opting to reschedule and around 20% are opting to throw a micro wedding on their original date.

The 71% rescheduling in the Hitched survey is made up of 34% moving to the first half of 2021, and 56% choosing the second half of 2021.

So, I think we can say that couples are still hoping to get married. I think the interesting development is the “micro wedding”. A small gathering can be much cheaper, gives everyone more time with the happy couple and takes an enormous amount of pressure out of the day. Many will probably have a bigger celebration once the restrictions are eased.

What’s next for weddings – in conclusion

I’ve only had two weddings this year. The first was just before the restrictions came in back in March. The second was last month where the couple decided to go ahead with a 30 people wedding and outside reception.  I think both couples would tell you they had wonderful days. All the recommended procedures were observed at both weddings and, to my knowledge, nobody was affected by CV-19 following either event.

Think about your options. Make plans but be prepared to change them. I could rattle on for a few thousand words about various options you might consider, but I won’t. If you want to talk through the various options just drop me an email or give me a call and we can talk about it – even if you aren’t, and don’t intend to be, my customer!

CLICK HERE to go the Hampshire County Council website for the latest public Health update with regards to weddings.

Never forget, these are difficult times for us all. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to say the whole World is at war and there is always someone worse off than you.

Socially distanced church wedding – August 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ August

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ August 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ August ~ the latest in my series of what’s been on my playlist this year. August was a strange month for me. I had some time in Fuerteventura and then two weeks of self-isolation back in England and I had a lot of time on my hands but I also seemed to have no time at all!

Musically it was strange too. There weren’t many new releases to get excited about but here are a few that I enjoyed.

Toni Braxton ~ Dance

“I just wanna dance” – well you can’t, so just sit down and tap your toes until this CV19 thing is sorted!

Toni Braxton is probably best known for her 1996 hit Un-break My Heart, with it’s excellent Frankie Knuckles dance mix click here. This new track to me sounds a bit dated and I’ve been looking for a cooler remix. So far I’ve only found the Dave Aude remix click here which doesn’t really do it for me. I’ll keep looking, I’m sure there’s one out there somewhere. It’s such a shame Frankie Knuckles is no longer with us to work his magic.

Bruno Major ~ Nothing

It’s been quite a mellow month for me. This guy came on my radar, thanks to the excellent “Switched On Pop” podcast. It’s very chilled, easy listening, lo-fi pop, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

Taylor Swift ~ The 1 (from Folklore)

Another mellow listen, at least as far as the music is concerned. Taylor Swift turns in a very good album covering some dark topics. In style it reminds me of the albums John Mayer was making a few years back.

Gregory Porter ~

Finally, right at the end of the month, the long-awaited new album from Gregory Porter came out. You may remember back in January I featured “Revival” (Click Here) At that time the album “All Rise” was expected in the middle of April but it was finally released on the last Friday of August… and that sums up 2020! I have a signed CD … I couldn’t resist!

That’s Life Sounds Better To Music ~ August 2020. I’ll be back in a few weeks with my September picks, in the meantime have fun and stay safe.

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ July 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ July 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ July 2020

The month started with a very strange revelation… I really like the new Lady Gaga album!

Lady Gaga ~ Chromatica (the album!)

Chromatica was released at the end of May and, to be honest, I really didn’t know anything about it. However, at the beginning of July I was listening to one of my favourite podcasts “Switched On Pop”, and WOW! CLICK HERE to go this fantastic podcast about this surprisingly good album.

I’m no Lady Gaga fan. I quite liked her first hit, Just Dance, but that was 12 years ago. So, without the podcast it’s unlikely I’d have bothered to listen to this, her sixth studio album. A guy called BloodPop (who has worked on loads of big stuff shares the writing and production credits. There are guest vocals on “Shine From Above’ from Elton John, and Ariana Grande on “Rain On Me”.

The album is a good listen and I had it on repeat for a few days. Having listened to the podcast it all makes sense – give it a try. Here’s the Ariana track

EDIT – then later in the month, along came this excellent remix by the fabulous Purple Disco Machine!

Johnny Hates Jazz ~ Spirit Of Love

I have a FaceBook friend called Scott in America, who I met through my time with Steve as internet radio DJ’s (on Morpher /JFSR / New York) , who posted this one. As he pointed out – “The lyrics are so good and fitting for right now” .

Johnny Hates Jazz are probably best known for their 1987 hit “Shattered Dreams” which reached number 5. They are still around / back and this is their new single. It reminds me a lot of “Harvest For The World”.

Deadmau5 & The Neptunes ~ Pomegranate

I’m a longtime fan of Joel aka Deadmau5, I’ve even been to see him live. The 2008 album “Random Album Title”, which includes “Brazil”, “Faxing Berlin” and “I Remember”, is one of my favourites.

The Neptunes are Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo… that’s right – THE Pharrell Williams, so quite a pedigree!

I’ll be totally honest, at first listen I was a little disappointed with Pomegranate, but it’s a grower.

Disclosure ~ Expressing What Matters

Those clever Lawrence brothers are back with a very clever reworking of Bozz Scaggs classic 70’s track “Lowdown”. I absolutely love it but, having said that, I’d love to hear a mix that used even more of Lowdown.

Expressing What Matters is on Disclosure’s new album “Energy” which is due at the end of August.

Joel Corry x MNEK ~ Head & Heart

Finally, I was looking for a video to use in the observation round of the quiz one week and I came across this one. Because I watched the video several times this catchy pop tune “ear-wormed” it’s way into my brain.

Joel Corry, for anyone who doesn’t know, originally came into the public eye on Geordie Shore – not that I have ever watched the show. Wikipedia describes him as a DJ, producer and fitness trainer. After 12 singles that didn’t chart between 2015 and 2018, this is his third and biggest tune to date.

That’s Life Sounds Better To Music ~ July 2020. As the month came to an end Taylor Swift released a new album – another one that really surprised me. We’ll see if I decide to include it next month.

Until next time my mug of tea is raised to you and yours ~ cheers!

Fuerte Fine SpeedQuizzing!

Fuerte Fine SpeedQuizzing

Introducing Fuerte Fine SpeedQuizzing!

My buddy Gary and I are running a campaign to raise the profile of our Speedquizzing on Fuerteventura. As part of this, we are running two free quizzes a week for the rest of July. As a previous supporter of my fundraising quiz nights. If you’ve already played SpeedQuizzing with me and donated to Cancer Research in Ce’s memory, I’d like to invite you to join us if you’d like to play again.

If you’ve never played before you’d still be welcome and if you could spare a few quid for Cancer Research it would be fantastic. PLEASE CLICK HERE to go to my original page about fundraising in Ce’s memory.

I’ll be doing Tuesday evenings and Gary, and his wife Gail will be hosting on Fridays. The quiz will start each night at 8pm (the doors open at 7:30) and will last around 2 hours.

How to play with Fuerte Fine SpeedQuizzing

To play you need to register and reserve your free place via TicketTailor. You will get a confirmation email with the Zoom link. Then, when you enter the Zoom room, you’ll get your SpeedQuizzing Live pin to play.

Speedquizzing is great fun. Some of the reviews and feedback we have had really cracks me up – when people tell you it’s “the best night they’ve had in lockdown” I really worry for them! For how to play PLEASE CLICK HERE.

For more details about this project and how you could have your own SpeedQuizzing Live event PLEASE CLICK HERE.

To stay in touch with our “new thing” you’d be welcome to join / like our Fuerte Fine Speedquizzing page on FaceBook – PLEASE CLICK HERE.

Remember it’s free in July and you’re welcome!

As I said, this is really about making new friends on the island, but we may well continue with a paid online quiz open to everyone (probably at £5 per team) if we get enough interest. If you have any questions please let me know – email paul@thepartydj.co.uk

Weddings, so where are we at now? July 2020

Where are we at now? It’s July 2020, the first phase of returning to normal is now underway, but what does it mean, and how can we make the most of it?

CLICK HERE for the Government Guidance document issued on 29th June 2020.

Let’s look at what’s on offer and what we could do to create a great wedding sooner rather than later.

Since 23 March, the start of lockdown, weddings in England have been banned.

The new government guidance for weddings in England from 4th July allows for ceremonies of up to 30 people but advise against receptions.

Wedding Ceremonies

This maximum number of 30 people is to include everybody at the ceremony – the couple, their witnesses, the officiants (registrars/ministers/vicars priests etc), guests and suppliers such as photographers. I think there’s no room for misinterpretation of this especially for civil ceremonies with a registrar.

The new guidelines go on to say, people should socially distance (I imagine that means 2 metres whenever possible and masks etc if 2 metres are not possible). Singing is not allowed. “Hands must be washed before exchanging rings” – that seems a bit strange, I would have thought it would make more sense to say the bride and bridegroom should keep the rings and not use a ring-bearer or Best Man to hold them – but what do I know!

Ceremonies should be kept “as short as reasonably possible” and limited to just the parts that are legally binding.

It’s been suggested that the requirement to follow the 2m rule – or 1m with extra precautions – will likely rule out the tradition of a father walking his daughter down the aisle unless they live in the same household. Again, I feel this is something you should discuss with your registrars or minister/priest/vicar.

The virus can be transferred by droplets from the mouth when speaking or coughing. So, it is recommended that singing, shouting or playing music at a volume that means people have to raise their voice, should all be avoided. As I say, this is based on scientific advice which suggests doing so produces more respiratory droplets which enter the air and can be inhaled by others.

Instead of singing, recordings are suggested. This means if someone was going to sing at your wedding you could record them and have it played. Remembering the previous point about keeping things as short, this may mean using it for the processional or recessional.

The government advice suggests changing traditional wedding layouts to avoid face-to-face seating, improving ventilation, using face masks and floor markings.

Wedding Receptions

The guidance also says receptions that “typically follow or accompany marriages or civil partnerships are strongly advised not to take place at this time”.

It goes on to say, small celebrations should only take place if they follow social distancing guidelines. Such as groups of up to two households indoors, or up to six people from different households outdoors. So outdoor (garden) receptions might be an option – but not really.

Penalties

The government says venues that do not follow the guidance could face action from the HSE or the local authority. The venue, especially for a civil ceremony where a registrar is present, will not allow any bending of the rules.

If you were thinking of a “back garden” reception again I would suggest you need to stick to the guidelines. If a neighbour alerted the authorities that there was a gathering, you could get a police visit. Then possibly be forced to stop.

So what can we do?

Well, you can get married. It probably won’t look much like a traditional wedding but you can do the legal bit. You can have a small gathering to celebrate the fact but, I would suggest, you need to be very careful. What would it look like? Will the registrar be wearing a mask or visor – who knows? The only way to find out is to ask.

You could postpone to a later date, but again this isn’t as straightforward as it should be. I know some wedding companies and venues are not as flexible as one would have hoped.

Bottom line… everybody’s situations are different. I’m more than happy to talk to you, whether you’ve booked with me or not, and suggest options.

There are things you can do to make the most of the current situation. For example, you can set up a video link for extra people to see the ceremony through a web link. And you could get everyone together for a big Zoom chat during the reception. I have lots of ideas, so if you want a chat please get in touch. I’d love to help if I can – even if it’s just with some free advice. Please email paul@thepartydj.co.uk

Life Sounds Better To Music ~ June 2020

Life Sounds Better To Music in June 2020 – Oh my days! Six months of 2020 down and even more of my bookings have been postponed to 2021. Thank goodness for music!

In case you haven’t seen the previous posts, I’ve been trying to share some of the music that’s been on my radar each month. If you type “Life Sounds better to music” in the search box it should bring up the others – like this one CLICK HERE for the May entry.

Here’s my selections for this month because Life Sounds Better To Music ~ June 2020

Lennon Stella Feat. Charlie Puth ~ Summer Feelings

A very pleasant summer track to kick things off (even though I can currently hear the rain on my conservatory roof). Lennon Stella is a Canadian singer and actress, she played Maddie Conrad in Nashville – I’ve never watched it, six series and loads of episodes … maybe I’ll dive in if we go back into lockdown. Charlie Puth… well if you haven’t heard of Carlie Puth where have you been for the last five years! It’s just a pleasant “now” sounding track from the soundtrack (see what I did there) of the new Scooby-Doo film Scoob! To see the film trailer click here.

Jacob Collier ~ All I Need (with Mahalia & Ty Dolla $ign)

Creating music in lockdown… I have a weekly catch up with some DJ mates, and we were talking about new music. Some suggested that there wouldn’t be any great new music until next year because the Music Industry is locked down – wrong!

If you have read my blog for a while, you will know I’m a Jacob Collier fan. He continues to create, record and release music all the time and lockdown has actually made him even more creative. If you want to find out more, check out this episode of the excellent “Switched on Pop” podcast CLICK HERE, or just watch this video.

The Shapeshifters Ft Billy Porter ~ Finally Ready!

Finally ready on 26th June (you see what I did there) was this fabulous single from the Shapeshifters featuring the multi-award winning Billy Porter. American Broadway theatre performer, singer and actor Billy Porter also co-wrote the track with Shapeshifters which they describe as “a declaration of Pride, of breaking free from past traumas to take a chance on love.”

The lift for the chorus is immense!

This is another great Shapeshifters track for 2020 and beyond.

Jubël ~ Dancing In The Moonlight (Feat Neimy)

A cool new version of a track that has become a real anthem in recent times. Originally a hit for Toploader in 2009, this is a remix of Jubël’s 2018 cover of the song.

If I was in Fuerteventura at the moment this would certainly be on my playlist for a sunset bar set.

Gold ~ Rewound ~ with Stevie Q & Paul Leighton

Finally this month, I’ve been listening to Radio shows I made with my great mate Steve ten years ago. Yep, Paul Leighton is me in case you hadn’t heard – it was my “stage name” when I was a club DJ back in the day. These shows are made up of great music we wanted to play. We spent hours preparing and recording these shows so it’s nice to revisit them ten years on. Here’s one, there are loads more on my page and I’ll add more in future weeks.

And that’s Life Sounds Better To Music ~ June 2020. Another testing month eased by the joy of music. See you soon.
