This is an important announcement for all my couples both old and new, in fact for all my clients – not just my wedding couples.
I’d like to help you get together with your friends and family. This could be especially relevant for those of you who have had to postpone your wedding. The challenges we have all faced in recent months have been totally unprecedented and being kept apart from our friends and loved ones is horrible.
I wish I had thought of this sooner!
I’ve been running quizzes for the last few weeks in support of Cancer Research and it’s a great way of connecting people. I want to help bring you together and celebrate life.
I have a Zoom account where we can stay together longer and I’d like to offer you the chance to come together for a quiz and if you want I’ll leave the Zoom Room open for you to chat in-between rounds and before and after the quiz. We can get up to 100 locations connected, so everyone can join in!
If you have a wedding booked with me this will be ABSOLUTELY FREE.
If you are a previous couple/client/random 😉 then I’ll ask you to make a donation of at least £50 to Cancer Research.
There’s more in this blog post about a previous event PLEASE CLICK HERE
And that is my Important announcement for all my couples. Please let me know if you’re interested and want more detail or to book a slot, email paul@thepartydj.co.uk
P.S. So far we have raised £835 + £191.25 Gift Aid for Cancer Research UK. Thank you to everyone who has given. Here’s the link to the JUST GIVING PAGE in Cecilia’s memory. Thanks so much to everyone who has donated x

It’s a small World after all …nope, not a post about Disney themed weddings, although I have done a few of those … maybe another time … anyway, please read on 😉
It’s a small World after all, I’ve been involved with weddings with Americans, Chinese, Dutch, Egyptian, Indian, Italian, Lithuanian, Moroccan, Nigerian, Norwegian, Pakistani, Polish, Scottish, Welsh and even a bride from Saint Helena in the South Atlantic. People are finding their partners from all over the World, not just down the road. Having said that, I married a woman whose house I went past almost every school day for 7 years but we met in Jersey, so maybe it was a small World then too!
I always encourage couples to think about wedding traditions from their birth culture and consider whether they should be incorporated in their big day. This year I had a wedding where, during the wedding breakfast, if the Bride or Bridegroom left the room (for a comfort break) all the guests went to kiss the remaining spouse. I think that was a Norwegian tradition.
The other thing I encourage you to do is start your own traditions. Perhaps there is a poem or a song you are passionate about – commit to read it or have it played at future events, birthdays and anniversaries. You could write a special toast that you could repeat whenever you are with family and friends who attend your wedding. Maybe you could include a DJ set by the Bride!
What would make your wedding even more personal and special to your friends and family?
Do some research and find out about cultural and family traditions, it’s a small World after all.

Have you ever wondered “what does a DJ do”? We all know he plays music, but surely anybody can do that! So, what does a DJ do that makes him better than just a guy who plays music? Well if you’ve seen my recent post “The DJ is FREE” (click here) you’ll have some idea, but here’s a few more thoughts on the subject.
In May I attended the fifth ProMobile Conference. An event for DJ’s to meet and hear inspirational talks on improving their skills and building their businesses. The keynote speaker was Mike Walter, an American DJ who runs Elite Entertainment, one of the most successful DJ Companies in America. He has achieved this by developing a system that has many DJ’s working to the same high standard. His Keynote was called “The keys To A Great Performance” and dealt with the four main areas a DJ needs to be able to deliver.
1 Programming
Programming the right song at the right time takes knowledge, experience and skill – besides that it’s easy 😉 I’ve been interested in music since I was about seven (that’s a very long time ago) and I’ve been a DJ, on and off, since I was fourteen. I’ve worked in record retail for Virgin and owned my own shop in partnership with my friend Mike. I also worked as a sales rep / promotion person for various record companies. I’m not saying I know it all – I really don’t, but I have a good depth of knowledge and I am always keen to find out more.
The other skill that is often talked about in this area is “reading the room”. That is basically looking at your audience and using your knowledge to match the music to the people you’re playing too. Often early at an event you can watch how people respond to the music being played in the background and this will help select the right music later. Beware of the DJ who doesn’t have a broad musical knowledge.
2 Mixing
All DJ’s mix right? WRONG! Mixing is a skill that has been around since the late seventies. The ability to transition from one song to the next so that there is no “dead air”. I was so lucky because my great friend Steve was one of the first DJs who learned to mix when he was working in Spain in the seventies. When I got to know him in the eighties, he took the time to help me and showed me how to do it properly – I’ve mixed ever since be it on vinyl, cd or now from digital files.
If the music is continuous people are more likely to stay on the dance floor. Have you ever been dancing to a live band and there’s a gap between songs – the temptation is to go and sit down or get another round of drinks in. Being able to mix is a DJs way of keeping the dance floor busy. Beware of the DJ who says “mixing isn’t important”.
3 MC’ing
Using the microphone is something that has come in and out of fashion for DJs over the years. In the early days of DJ’ing they would introduce every song. Later there was a time when the DJ would use the mic at every opportunity to wind the audience up. Next the fashion was for DJs not to talk at all. In fact many clubs and bars didn’t even have microphones for the DJs, it was all about the music. My style is to only speak if I have something worth saying. You really don’t need me to tell you, “that was Abba and Dancing Queen, a number one in 1976”. I’ve trained to use the microphone, how to make the most of the “spotlight moments” at functions when there is something worth telling everyone. Beware of the DJ who “prattles on”.
4 Interaction
The final skill Mike suggested every DJ should have is interaction. On some occasions for him this will mean actually getting out on the dance floor and leading the dances. Over here where we do things slightly differently. I think interaction is actually being approachable and taking the time to connect with the audience on a personal level. Occasionally I’ll ask everyone to come to the dance floor and maybe, if it feels right. I may even ask everyone to clap or sing along – but only if it’s really appropriate and definitely not endlessly … I promise! Beware of the DJ who just stares at his laptop all night.
In Conclusion
Surely, in this day and age, every DJ should be able to do all of the above! But there are still many who can’t. Most DJs will tell you they are the perfect guy for your event. Perhaps you should ask them their thoughts on these four topics, Programming, Mixing, MC’ing and Interaction? Their answers will give you an insight into their style, and you can decide if they are a good fit for your event.
What does a DJ do? A DJ does way more than play the music, he brings the party! If you are thinking about booking a DJ for your wedding, or special occasion, please take the time to find the right guy. If you think I could be that guy or have any questions please contact me – please CLICK HERE.

Following my recent post about requests for your wedding party (click here) I promised a blog about Choosing Your First Dance.
Some couples know exactly what they want for their first dance, others haven’t a clue. Either is no problem, I’m always happy to help or just to do my best to make the first dance stress-free and memorable for all the right reasons.
What won’t happen at one of my weddings is a mumbled introduction with nobody knowing what’s going on. I’ll do my best to make sure everyone knows exactly what is happening and that all the important guests (mums etc) are in the room with a good view of what’s about to happen.
These days I often make special edits of songs to reduce the length or sometimes extend them, I’ve also made first dance “mash-up’s” combining several songs together. These are the kinds of services a professional DJ will offer their couples – I’ve also seen other local DJ’s asking if any other DJ’s can do this for them!
Some couples have amazing plans for their first dance, others just want to do a slow rotate for a verse and a chorus before their friends and family are invited to join them. I’ll make sure we make a plan and know exactly what’s going to happen and how to make the most of the opportunity so that the photographer gets some great images.
The list is an interesting mix of tracks, many of which have become wedding staples. It may be a good place to start if you don’t already have an “our tune” that you want to use and are looking for inspiration.
Choosing Your First Dance is a very personal thing – every couple are different, I always do my best to make the most of this traditional wedding day highlight.
The first dance is just one of the big moments of the day when music is important … stay tuned for another post about wedding music soon 😉

Tomorrow it will my be great honour to play a part in the wedding of Charlotte and Simon. It’s going to be another beautiful day and I’m sure it will be an amazing wedding. It’s made even more special for me because Charlotte is my niece, and 29 years ago I was the DJ for Kath & Martyn her mum and dad’s wedding.
What a lovely way to start the day … week … month! A message from a fabulous couple.
Hi Paul
Sorry this is so late we’re only starting to get straight after our wonderful month long honeymoon, but we wanted to say thank you so much for making our wedding day so special.
We absolutely loved all of our reception and evening party and we couldn’t have made it so great without all your help. You patience with us in planning and on the night with all the bands playing and your advice on having the quiz, advice cards, timings for the evening and inflatable microphones etc was invaluable. So thank you so much.
We have attached a few pictures for you of us and yourself on the day for your files.
