“I didn’t pay a deposit”

“I didn’t pay a deposit luckily as they requested payment on the night.” – that was what a Bride-to-be recently told me when she was looking for a wedding DJ last minute.

To be fair, I don’t think she had a huge budget and she needed a “bargain DJ” and not an experienced, professional like myself. But risking your wedding entertainment by booking someone who doesn’t take a deposit, or issue any kind of contract, seems foolhardy to me.

This particular caller was less than a month from her wedding and the DJ she had booked was not replying to her emails or phone calls. I wasn’t available but recommended a couple of Dj’s who I thought might fit her brief.

I’ve talked about this many times before but anyone booking a DJ for any event, especially their wedding, really should meet them in advance, get a contract and agree payment terms – which normally means paying a deposit if not the full amount in advance of the event. If you book a “bargain DJ” for a couple of hundred quid or less he’s probably not running a legal business – paying tax and with the correct insurance and equipment safety certification. Most weekends there are people trying to find DJ’s to cover last minute because they’ve been let down by one of these guys. Here’s a blog post from 2012 on the same theme! Please don’t let this happen to you, especially if we are talking about your wedding. Make sure you pay a deposit and get a contract so that you can relax and focus on having a great time.
