This Sunday 7th April Botley Park Wedding Fayre is being held by The Hampshire Wedding Group. This is another new venue for us and we are delighted to be organising this event. I’ve not done a wedding at Botley Park for many years so perhaps this will change.
As always with Hampshire Wedding Group Fayres, this is a free event with no charge for admission and there’s even a chance to win some free stuff in our prize draw. You can even get an additional entry to the draw by preregistering (click here) – but remember your entry will only be counted if you attend on the day.
We have a few new members in the group and this event should have the most exhibitors we’ve had fora long time. Our fayres are very relaxed friendly affairs and I recommend you take the time to talk to everyone and pick their brains for expert advice.

Both of the wedding fayres are organised by The Hampshire Wedding Group (click here). The HWG is a collection of hand picked expert wedding suppliers based in Hampshire. They offer engaged couples a range of services to cater for every aspect of their wedding day. The group is compiled by recommendation accepting only the very best, highly experienced expert suppliers.

1 Make sure they are actually a business and can deliver what they promise
2 Make sure they have any insurances and/or legal certification required
3 Make sure you like them … in fact I want to go one step further. Look for people who LOVE what they do! Yes it’s a business and they need to fulfil the criteria above, but there are some of us who really love what we do and will always try and go above and beyond what is expected of us.
Get out to two or three wedding fairs, meet suppliers, ask questions and listen to the advice they give you. Find out how long they’ve been doing their thing and try to get a sense of how they feel about it. Many wedding fairs have new businesses exhibiting – can they deliver on their promises?

Autumn Wedding Fair Season or Autumn Wedding Fayre Season? … Now there’s a question 😉
Next week sees the start of the Autumn Wedding Fair Season. This year I won’t be at as many as I would have attended in previous years but I still recommend you visit a few if you’re looking for ideas and suppliers.
My advice is to try and talk to every supplier exhibiting. Listen to what they have to tell you and you’ll get a feel for what kind of person they are and if you like them. Look for people who really love what they do and who aren’t just trying to sell you stuff. Ask questions – they should have answers. Beware … wedding fairs often attract exhibitors who are new and looking to fill their diaries – look for well established, experienced, professional suppliers.
I will be at The Winchester Guildhall on Sunday 16th September and Ampfield Golf Club on Sunday 7th October. Those are two of the Hampshire Wedding Group Autumn Wedding Fairs. They also have one on Sunday 2nd September but I have a big wedding the day before at The Italian Villa in Bournemouth and so won’t be able to attend. “I was let down yesterday”… So this just came up on my FaceBook timeline …
“Are there any photographers free on 28th July? I was let down yesterday by my photographer and with my wedding in 4 weeks I need to find a replacement. I have £250 as that was the price of the last one. Bridal prep to first dance/evening (11:30am/9pm)
Please if you can help then either message me with prices or leave your link with prices. Thanks”
It’s really sad that a couple have been let down just four weeks before their wedding but just think about it for a moment. This bride booked a photographer for her wedding at the “bargain” price of £250 – £250 for nine and a half hours shooting (that’s just over £26 per hour) PLUS travel time PLUS editing time after the event. The date isn’t even mid-week, it’s a Saturday – I know many great photographers, some are cheaper than others but none of them would be as cheap as £250!
Looking at the thread, some people have been put forward but I’d think most of them are new to the business or, what are often called, “Weekend Warriors” – they do this on the side, they are not a proper business and they often don’t have insurance and the other certificates required to trade lawfully. Please forgive me if you are reading this and you run a business charging this sort of fee – I’d love to hear how you manage it.
This kind of situation happens a lot with DJ’s too and I often see threads on forums when this happens – one of the common replies is “they can pay me £250 and I won’t turn up either”. I believe it’s very possible that if someone takes a booking for a relatively low fee and then gets an offer of a larger payment they may well let the original customer down and switch to the higher payer. The FaceBook DJ pages often carry “urgent DJ required NOW” messages where couples have been let down on the actual evening of their wedding – sad but true.

Think carefully what you want from your suppliers, meet them, build a real relationship with them so they give you exactly the service you want. Please don’t find yourself saying “I was let down yesterday”. It’s the second Hampshire Wedding Group of the Autumn season. Again we are giving away wedding discount vouchers to spend with HWG members with a combined value of over £2000. I’ll start this post with a confession, magicians make me nervous… after all they do “tricks”. One I do trust (I think 😉 ) is my Hampshire Wedding Group colleague and friend Paul Newton.
I’ve known Paul for a few years now and been fortunate to work alongside him a few times and I think he must be an actual wizard because I can’t see how he does what he does. I’ve even been next to him at wedding fairs for hours and watched him do the same trick multiple times and I still can’t work it out!
So when Tarik and Amina asked a while ago for my suggestions for an entertainer at their wedding which was held last weekend I had no hesitation in recommending Paul Newton ~ Magician, Mind Reader, Hypnotist (and all round lovely bloke).
Paul arrived while Tarik and Amina’s guests were enjoying their wedding breakfast and was soon going from table to table amazing their friends and family with his close up magic. After the speeches Paul took a few moments with the newly weds to show everybody that … you know what, I’m not going to tell you. What I will say is that it was magic, it was romantic and Tarik and Amina absolutely loved it and so did their guests!
