Sheena’s 60th Party at The Ageas Bowl

What makes a great party? Well, Sheena’s 60th Party at The Ageas Bowl last month is a good example.

From the moment the guests arrived to the moment the last one left, Sheena and I had made a plan to ensure something was happening. We squeezed a lot in but made sure nothing was rushed and that everyone felt a part of the celebration.

I arrived at The Ageas around 4pm to load in and set up in the first floor Robin Smith suite. By the time Sheena and her family arrived I was suited and booted with the music playing and a slideshow running on my big projector screen with over 400 pictures from the family album. Everything was ready for Sheena’s Party at The Ageas Bowl.

Once we had everyone seated, I introduced Sheena’s Uncle Pete who presented a brilliant quiz. When Sheena and I met to plan the party I mentioned a quiz and she told me all about her Uncle who is an excellent quizmaster and has done my family events in the past including her 50th. I had my colleague John with me who run quiz nights and we were both very impressed with Pete’s quiz. There were 9 tables of guests and the winners were invited to go to the warm buffet table first, runners up second, etc … the table that came last had to wait a while longer!

After the two course buffet it was time for the formalities. I introduced another of Sheena’s uncles, Malcolm, who had travelled from Canada to join in the celebrations and he gave a lovely speech. Then I had video messages I’d collected from friends and family who couldn’t be there – messages from Thailand, Hong Kong, more from the family in Canada and many other places – over 6 minutes of snippets! Finally Sheena said her thank you’s – with many lovely insights into her family and friendships.

Then we gathered everyone together so that the official photographers could get a big photo of everyone together. Two of the guests, Thelma and Jacob, were also celebrating birthdays and Sheena had cakes for both of them. Then, birthday girl, Thelma sang “Ain’t Missbeahvin'” acappella with everyone singing and clapping along.

Finally it time to get the dancing underway and it wasn’t long before the floor was busy and it stayed that way until the end at 12:30. I had plenty of requests from the birthday girl which I had in advance and I was able to add requests from the guests as the evening went on. We were also entertained with an excellent version of “Never Gonna Give you Up” by Gerry who sang over a backing track I had ready for him.

There were a few other things that we did to make the evening special – but if I tell you everything people will just copy and that wouldn’t be right 😉

That was Sheena’s fabulous Party at The Ageas Bowl, truly a night to remember.

8 Days Of 80’s ~ Day 3 ~ Joe Jackson ~ Another World

8 Days Of 80’s ~ Day 3 ~ Joe Jackson ~ Another World

My friend Rory challenged me to take part in the 8 Days Of 80’s FaceBook campaign and this is day three from me.

On A&M Records
I got to sell/plug/promote artists like The Police, Supertramp, Joan Armatrading, Squeeze, Split Enz, Elkie Brooks, Chris De Burgh, Janet Jackson’s first singles and album and Joe (no relation) Jackson, so today I picket a track from the amazing Night & Day album.

I have many great memories of my time at A&M working out of the offices on New Kings Road, it was like a dream come true to finally get a job in the record industry. I had a company car (Ford Escort) full of records, a company folder, tote bad and bomber jacket – I was living the dream! During my time with the company I saw many great gigs and went to exclusive functions like a fish and chip supper at a trendy restaurant on The Kings Road to launch a Police album.

I left A&M the day before I got married, I dropped my car back to the offices with Adrian/Norm (my best man) who was driving me back to Southampton, and they took us out for lunch to say goodbye – this delayed our return to Southampton and we nearly missed picking up the wedding paperwork from the registrars office in Romsey (but that’s another story).

Joe Jackson ~ Another World
As I say this is from the incredible Night and Day album, there were a number of tracks I could have selected, most notably “Steppin Out” and “Breaking Us In Two” but I decided to go with this one. I’ve seen Joe and his band many times over the years but the tours for this album were brilliant, Sue Hadjopoulos is an amazing percussionist and she brought even more energy to the band.

My New Vlog!

IMG_0181

Part of my new 2015 look will be regular Vlogs.  I know what you are thinking, everyone says they are going to do new stuff, especially at this time of the year, and it lasts a few weeks.

Well I’m going to post at least 100 blogs in 2015, I promise!

I’m calling them my 123/ABC videos – always under 3 minutes and really simple, well that’s the plan.

Here’s the first one, it’s an introduction …

Dolly’s Vintage Dance Night

Lipstick On Your Collar

Saturday night found us back in Basingstoke, well Old Basing Village Hall to be accurate, for Dolly’s Vintage Dance Night. The evening was put together by two lovely ladies, Genevieve and Sharon, as a fundraiser for the Tommy’s, a charity that funds medical research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. CLICK HERE for more info about Tommy’s.

Dolly's Vintage Dance Night

The plan for the evening was music from the 1950’s and end in the 1980’s with live music from duo Fred Coole and Oscar Middleton and the fantastic Band “Lipstick on your Collar” with me filling in the gaps and rounding off the party.

DJ Old Basing

There was a fully licenced bar and some great food available with waitress service. Alastair from Ideal Imaging providing a photo booth with all the proceeds going to Tommy’s and most of the party-goers came dressed from their favourite decade.

Thank you for the booking and many congratulations to Genevieve and Sharon for organising a very successful fund-raiser that really was toe tapping good fun!

Sean’s Sixtieth

party at the Waterfront

party at the Waterfront

On Saturday I played for Sean’s 60th party at the lovely Waterfront Brasserie at Lee-on-the-Solent. Imagine my surprise when I heard Sean’s wife’s request on the Graham Radio Show! I waited for the show to appear on the iPlayer a few hours later and edited out their bit and was able to integrate it into Sean’s speech for him at the party.

Sean and Shirley are cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End next month – they plan to do it in just 13 days … I’ll still probably be recovering from their party!

Birthday cake

This was the fabulous cake, made by Kate from the Waterfront.

Thanks to everyone who made it a great evening, and thanks to Sean and Shirley for allowing me to share this with you.

A Significant Birthday

Happy Birthday Merchants

Last Saturday I was booked to play for a lovely lady’s birthday at Merchants at Ocean Village in Southampton. It was my first time playing at Merchants and I was really impressed with everything about the venue which is really special. Mandy and John really do make everyone feel welcome and their team were really attentive. I’m looking forward to my next time there and totally recommend a visit – the food looks amazing!

Party at Merchants Southampton

The balloon arch was by Candy and Ken from Balloon Express who I last saw at Sara and Ross’ wedding back in January.

I took a few pictures but until I’ve shown them to the birthday girl, and have her permission, I’m not going to share them, however this one sums up the evening … and my photography skills!

Booking With The Corporate Event Company

Corporate header

I had a call earlier this week from The Corporate Event Company who needed a DJ for a Christmas Party and I was recommended by another supplier. The function was held in a company head office in Basingstoke and a large area had been transformed into a fabulous play zone and discotheque.

Corporate 1

John and his team from The Corporate Event Company were a real joy to work with and they made me very welcome. I was really impressed by their attention to detail and the quality of service they provided for the client. They installed a brilliant starlit dance floor, drapes and DJ booth as well as a gorgeous semi-circular illuminated bar, a number of table football machines, other big games and around 30 illuminated cube seats – the effect was amazing!
