Tonight I Had A Lot Of Fun ~ That’s All

IMG_0069

“Tonight I had a lot of fun ~ that’s all ~ Goodnight!” that was my FaceBook status update early on Saturday morning and boy did I mean it!

I had just got home from a 50th party for local DJ from back in the day Shaun. Shaun was one of the DJ’s who came to the fore in the generation after me, he was resident at a few places including Martines in Eastleigh where he did I guess around six months of the year while he spent the other six months in Corfu. Anyway, I was delighted when Shaun invited me to play at his significant birthday party.

My brief from Shaun was to play what we played back then, now THIS was a real thrill for me. In fact one of my resolutions for this year was to do a night like this. I often get asked to play 70’s, 80’s or 90’s but usually that means pop and not the club music that I played for years in bars and discos. I haven’t really played a night like this since Steve Q and I did the Reunion at Oceana back in 2009 and that night I left all the hard work to Steve! This was going to be plenty of the stuff we played on our GOLD radio show.

It was also more than a bit daunting as many of our old DJ cronies were also invited so I made sure I pre-selected plenty of big tunes and spent some time practising my mixing in the week before the party. That may surprise some but much of the music I was going to be playing was from the 70’s and early 80’s, before the arrival of the drum machine, so the tempos varied with the speed of the drummer, and practise is always time well spent.

Here’s how the evening went …

Jackson 5 – I Want You Back (Dimitri from Paris Supa Funk Brakes Mix)

It was great to play alongside ** Andrew Browning as George Michael ** again, it’s been a long time! Andrew did a brilliant show full of George and Wham’s greatest hits. For the encore Shaun joined Andrew for “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” taking the Elton John part – but if you know Shaun you’ll understand when I say it was more like George duetting with George!

Patrice Rushen – Forget Me Nots (had to after Andrew’s George Michael set)
Junior – Mama Used to Say
Cameo – Candy

Then it was time for eighties tribute four piece ** 80’s Revolution ** with a set full of the biggest hits from that amazing decade. Among the highlights for me were a great version of Huey Lewis’ “The Power Of Love” and Tears For Fears “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. The birthday boy joined them for a couple of Spandau Ballet tracks ~ “Through The Barricades” and “Gold”.

Day 7 #7DayMusicChallenge ~ Earth Wind & Fire ~ My Promise

Earth Wind & Fire ~ My Promise

I never thought we’d get to see Earth Wind & Fire.  Back in the day their shows were legendary for their high-energy and big production values.  In September 2013 they released their first new album in eight years, “Now, Then & Forever”, with 3 of the original members and then announced a tour – we had to go!

2014 wasn’t a great year for us personally and we missed at least one concert we had tickets for, but on 10th September we saw Earth Wind & Fire at the Bournemouth International Centre and they were absolutely amazing.

Like all the artists I’ve picked in my #7DayMusicChallenge I could have chosen numerous songs here but rather than go for an oldie I’ve picked “My Promise” from “Now, Then & Forever” – you can see original band members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson with the current band that also includes Phil’s son – absolutely love it!

Never forget Life Sounds Better To Music!

Day 6 #7DayMusicChallenge ~ Maze ~ Joy & Pain

Maze ~ Joy & Pain

First if anyone else would like me to nominate them please let me know – thanks!

Today I’ve picked Maze who Ce and I saw at The Hammersmith Odeon, we’re not sure of the date but I’m pretty sure it was in May 1985.  I’m not sure if it was just the two of us or if we went with friends. What I do remember was the amazing vibe and the feeling of love in the room.  This was in the days when I was working as a sales rep around the Central South Coast area and had Radio London with Tony Blackburn and Robbie Vincent on in my car most days of the week.

If you don’t know Maze you should.  Their Live in New Orleans album from 1981 is one of the greatest live albums ever made (according to me).  The track I’ve picked is Joy & Pain, which sums up so much of what life has brought us.

Always remember Life Sounds Better To Music!

Day 5 #7DayMusicChallenge ~ Teddy Pendergrass ~ Turn Off The Lights

Teddy Pendergrass ~ Turn Off The Lights

If you haven’t read one of my posts on this topic before then I should explain that my theme for the #7DayMusicChallenge has been Soul/Dance acts I’ve seen live.  Today we come to one of the greatest soul singers of all time.

Theodore DeReese “Teddy” Pendergrass (March 26, 1950 – January 13, 2010) He first found fame in the seventies as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes and then went on to have a solo career.

I saw him at the Southampton Gaumont in 1981 and without doubt the sexiest man I’ve ever seen.  You know that expression “about as much use as a spare p***k at a wedding”, well that’s how it felt at a Teddy concert. I took Ce, looking back that was quite a risk!

He was beautiful and I think every woman in the theatre wanted to be with him – even if it was only for a glass of champagne.  The following year he was involved in a car accident which paralysed him from the chest down.  In 2009 he had surgery for colon cancer but died six months later.

My nomination today goes to another DJ buddy Andy Mercmonk Phillips.
