Whitney Houston ~ How Will I Know

I saw Whitney twice.  The first time was in 1985 at Hippodrome in London where she launched her career in the UK.  It was the DMC (Disco Mix Club) Convention and a few of us (from Martines and Fridays) went up in a minibus (I think) organised by Gold Hampshire buddy Stevie Q – who I nominate to take on the #7DayMusicChallenge.  Merv was there too.

This video is from the same year.  I was actually working for Whitney’s record label Arista as a sales rep at the time and promoted the first album.  There was a huge buzz in the company, everyone knew she was going to be a huge star and there was a fair amount of pressure to make sure everything was right from day one.

A few of us saw her again a couple of years later at Wembley Arena, and again possibly “in the round”. I can’t remember much about that night – I think we were a bit disappointed with her performance but I can’t be sure.

Totton Running (& Limbo) Club Annual Awards Diner

Yesterday I was back with Steve my partner from our Gold project for our second year with Totton Running Club. The venue was again the function room at AFC Totton.

After the food, Sue and Simon presented the awards and then it was our turn to turn on the action. It didn’t take long for the floor to fill up. Steve and I mixed it up with plenty of our classic Gold oldies as well as lots of this years floor fillers ~ TRC goes Gangnam Style!

The party saw the first outing of my new limbo poles ~ they went down a storm!

Very special thanks to everyone involved in this brilliant night, Sue and Simon from the Running Club who organised another great night, the bar staff the excellent catering team from Smallpiece Catering, and of course all the club members who amde our evening such fun!

Caroline’s Birthday Party

Another Gold gig with Steve this weekend.

This time we were in the function room at The Salmon Leap in Totton for Caroline’s Birthday Party. As you can see it was fancy dress, Steve and I went as two radio DJ’s on a night out, and if that was Caroline’s old school uniform I’m Tony Blackburn. Caroline’s husband Rob was dressed perfectly for a Gold night out with his flared suit,’fro and platforms! It was good to see many old friends again – thanks everyone.

Totton Running Club Presentation Dinner & Dance

Last Saturday saw another gig, this time with Steve my partner in our Gold project. If you don’t already know about Gold CLICK HERE. You can also find us on FaceBook CLICK HERE.

Anyway, where were we … oh yes, Saturday. We were in the function room at AFC Totton’s new ground. Now this was the day when Totton beat Bradford Park Avenue 8-1 in the first round proper of the F.A. Cup, and when we arrived the room was full of players, sponsors and supporters! That party moved to the club bar next door and various people appeared from nowhere to get the room cleaned and ready for our function – and they did a truly fantastic job!

The guests arrived, and took their places for dinner while we finished setting up and organised the screens to show a photomontage of the club members running at various events from the last 12 months.

After the food, the awards were presented, and then it was our turn to turn on the action. It didn’t take long for the floor to fill up.

I went around the tables and picked up a few requests which ranged from the Beach Boys to Rizzle Kicks. Steve and I had both brought our tambourines and in no time they’d been requisitioned by the dancers. Glow sticks and inflatable guitars also appeared and everyone seemed to be on the floor at one time or another.

Special thanks to everyone involved in this brilliant night, Sue and Simon from the Running Club who organised a great night, the bar staff and catering job who kept everyone fed and watered, and especially the unsung heroes who sorted the room out.

Gold Show 58 on JFSR Thursday 6th, and Disco 935 on Sunday 9th / Monday 10th January

It’s time to get back in the groove and get this year goin’! Steve, my partner on the GOLD project, and I got together earlier this week to put our first new show of the year together – and it was so good after a gap of a few weeks – well I thought it was, and I hope you do too.

The new show ~ number 63 ~ goes to air first on JAZZ FUNK SOUL RADIO (JFSR) today, Thursday 6th January, between 4pm and 6pm GMT. By the way, thanks to everyone who joined in for the holiday shows – we had quite a party in there, with friends from all over the World – thank you, thank you, thank you.


Then, on Sunday (EST) the show will be broadcast from the heart of New York on DISCO 935 ~ NEW YORK’S JAMMER.
