Lords Discotheque ~ 1981

Recently I’ve been thinking about my time in Jersey back in 1981 (surely that’s a typing error – surely I was too young to be DJ’ing in 1981 – I was just a baby then!). This post is how I remember things, if anyone can fill in the gaps or make corrections I’d love to hear from you.

My friend Norm (Adrian) was working for Barclays in Jersey and I decided to quit my day job over here and try my luck working on the Island. Norm introduced me to an agent he knew who provided entertainers for many of the hotels and I did a booking or two for him ~ the next thing I know I’m offered the residency at the top club in St Helier! The club was Lords, owned by local businessman John Lord and managed for him by Tony Nightingale. I believe I replaced local DJ Chris Tangy – sorry Chris I have no idea how to spell your name, Chris was really lovely to me and made me very welcome on his patch. I’ve tried to track down Tony and Chris on the web, but no luck so far.

Jersey was an exciting place to be in 1981, the BBC were filming the first series of the Bergerac which aired in the Autumn. I spent one day filming in the club as the DJ playing the same track, the Human League’s “Love Action”, over and over so that all the dancers were moving at the same tempo when the shots were cut together. The scene only lasted a couple of minutes and I was never seen 🙁

Last week when I was searching again for information relating to this time I found this blog post. The writer has written about all the Jersey clubs of the mid-80’s and here is the Lords post CLICK HERE. The floor plan is how I remember it but the DJ booth appears to have been moved.

After the summer season Mr Lord decided he wanted a change of DJ and Tony let me go and I returned to Southampton. It was a fabulous time in my life and to make it even better I had met my wonderful wife Ce who 31 years later is still putting up with me!

If YOU remember me or can fill in any gaps please get in touch ~ paul@thepartydj.co.uk
