Long time no see, but I’m always here!

I’m so sorry, it appears my last post was way back in the middle of October! In fairness there has been quite a lot going on, including several wonderful weddings. However, there’s really no excuse and I’ll try and update here more often.

I haven’t totally disappeared, especially as far as my couples are concerned. Even though I’ve been busy and have gone away a couple of times, I’ve always been contactable. I always try and reply to emails and messages within minutes and I can’t think of the last time anyone had to wait more than 24 hours for a reply. I’m always here for my couples and for anyone who needs my help.

So, here’s my plan for the next few months …

Data Protection, GDPR and The Party DJ

Data Protection, GDPR and The Party DJ (well it had to happen, didn’t it!) I’m sure you already know that GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation. I take the privacy and protection of friends, clients and all potential clients I’m contacted by, very seriously.

I have always been very careful to protect any data I’ve been given access to and I don’t buy, sell or swap personal data. I only hold personal information necessary in order to effectively operate my business and to communicate with, and help, people with their wedding and party plans. I store all data safely (both electronically and in print), likewise I’m very careful how I dispose of all data – incinerating any print data.

I use Mailchimp for any mail campaigns and they fully comply with the new GDPR laws and guarantee the highest level of data encryption and security. CLICK HERE for more information on Mailchimp and GDPR. All of my Mailchimp emails include options to update your preferences or unsubscribe. Likewise if you reply to a regular email requesting I remove you I will and remove your details from my files.

Having previously run a business where we dealt with children and held a huge membership database I have always been very mindful of security. Hopefully this new legislation will go someway to remove the problems we all face from spammers and criminals who abuse data – let’s hope so. It will be fascinating to watch what happens in the coming months and years with Data Protection, GDPR and The Party DJ, right now it feels a bit like the final hours before the New Year came in on 31st December 1999!

Here are a couple of “Save The Dates” for February. I guess they aren’t just “save the dates”, they are really “please come and join me”.

Save The Dates!First, on Friday 16th, The Hampshire Wedding Group are organising a Valentine’s Charity Dinner Dance at Ampfield Golf Club in aid of Marie Curie & The Southampton Centre for Cancer Immunology. I’m delighted, like many of the group members, to be donating my services to the evening.

Tickets are £45 per person, however I’m putting together a table of guests and would like to offer all previous and current couples and their guests a £10 contribution per ticket – so they will pay £35 per ticket, or £45 if they wish with an extra £10 going straight to the charities. Save The Dates!Then, on Tuesday 20th, it’s my next ‘Creating Your WOW Wedding’ evening when I run through the typical wedding day timeline to explain how to incorporate the principles in the ‘Your WOW Wedding’ booklet into your big day.

Meet The Finalists At The Kings Head In Christchurch

Last night it was the Meet The Finalists evening for the Hampshire and Dorset Wedding supplier Awards and Ce and I went along. The event was held at The Kings Arms Hotel in Christchurch. Last time I was there it was for Max and Kevan’s wedding a couple of years ago.

We were greeted at the door by the hotel General Manager Nicolas Roulier and the event organisers Sam and Claire from South Coast Events – another great evening from this excellent company!

As always at these events we headed for the people we knew, so first up it was the other DJ’s Mark from Pegasus Disco from Weymouth and Toby from Your DJ. Early arrivals also included lovely local florist florist Jo Hicks.

Fellow Hampshire Wedding Group member, great photographer, and all-round good guy, Antony Burdett-Clark (Lightbox Studio / ABC Wedding Photography) also made it. Talking of photographers it was fab to see Tom and Murray from One Thousand Words Wedding Photography who I worked with at Mandy and Dave’s wedding back in 2015 – click here to see their blog, they are in the Dorset finals this year.

Talking of photography, we also met Imogen and Sam from The Caravan Photobooth Company who have converted “Betty”, a lovely old caravan, into “Betty Booth” a wonderful way to put some quirky style into your celebration.

We met a couple of lovely bridal wear suppliers from Wimborne, who are both in the Dorset finals. First we met Kelly from Brides With Curves who specialise in plus size wedding dresses in sizes 18 to 32. Then we met Oxana from Minster Designs who carry dresses by designers Martina Liana, Separates, Stella York, Willowby, White One, LouLou, Callista and Ivory & Co. Minster Designs supplied the dresses for the wedding that’s been in the news recently with TWENTY EIGHT Bridesmaids, and One Thousand Words were the photographers – CLICK HERE for the story on the Mirror website

Mobile bars seem to be very well represented in the 2017 Awards Finals, it’s always good to see Darren from A&D Bars in attendance who are in both the Hampshire and Dorset awards. and also to meet Mike from The Paddock Bar from Dorset.

We also had a quick chat with Andrew and Robert from Creatiques Bridal Boutique from Southsea and The HairDressSir along with Lucy Bernier hair, makeup, nails and beauty and Rachel from Flaunt Your Face makeup artistry.

Next time we’ll meet the finalists will be at the Awards dinner on Friday 10th November at The Ageas Hilton. It was great to be back in that room with so many great memories of Max and Kevan’s wedding – their beautiful ceremony across the road in the Pavilion, Kevan’s speech, and Max’s special guest DJ set (which she repeated at her birthday party earlier this year!), here’s a picture from their big day at The Kings Arms.

Hampshire Wedding Supplier Awards Finalist 2017

Following on from the announcement I made last month CLICK HERE I am delighted to say I’ve been selected as a Hampshire Wedding Supplier Awards Finalist 2017

Last year I was honoured and delighted to win in two categories – “Best DJ” and “Contribution To The Wedding Industry”

So now it’s time to book our tickets to Award Ceremony event on the evening of Friday 10th November at The Hilton at Ageas, Southampton. Competition for the award looks even tougher this year so I’m taking nothing for granted but it will be good to meet up with so many great wedding industry colleagues. I’m delighted to see fellow Hampshire Wedding Group members Miriam ~ Miriam King Hair & Make Up, Sue ~ Tie The Knot Events and Antony ~ Weddings by ABC / LightBox Studios (who like me also won last year) have also made the finals in their categories.

I have a couple more testimonial blogs to post over the next couple of weeks which were given in support of the awards. As I explained in the previous post about this topic (link in the first sentence) these awards are “judged blind”, so there can be no favouritism which I think is really excellent. I’ve stepped back from the National Awards this year as I only really work in Hampshire and occasionally Dorset so networking further afield isn’t really for me.

So I will be keeping everything crossed until 10th November (which will be murder on my circulation!) for the Hampshire Wedding Supplier Awards Finalist 2017

2017 Hampshire Wedding Supplier Awards

I’m delighted to confirm that I’ve entered the 2017 Hampshire Wedding Supplier Awards.

You may remember I won in two categories at last years awards, ‘DJ’ and ‘Contribution to the Wedding Industry’ (you can see me left back row in the picture below). I wasn’t sure about entering again. However, having spoken to a few of my colleagues from the Hampshire Wedding Group, I decided to give it a go again. The reviews and testimonials I received from my couples and colleagues were fantastic (thank you so much) and I’ll probably share them here in the coming weeks.

I’ve blogged before about why I enter awards (CLICK HERE) and I don’t really want to go over the same ground again but suffice it to say I strive to be the best I can for my couples and other clients.

The judging process for these awards depends on a ‘blind judging’ process. Here’s how they explain it …

Each application is judged on its content alone, along with any photos and videos submitted. The decision to have this process in place was to allow applicants to use their passion and evidence of their commitment to their job to persuade judges, rather than outside factors such as websites and blogs, which can be paid for. Blog entries can be submitted, so long as they do not mention the company name or details which can allude to a specific company.
Each judge is given the entries to read and mark according to the judging criteria, they will award marks for each answer and tally these up for an overall score. The sum total of the judges scores are averaged and that is the final score for a business. This determines who is a finalist.

The Hampshire Wedding Industry Awards Finalists will be announced on Friday 13th October with the 2017 Hampshire Wedding Supplier Awards Gala being held on Friday 10th November – keep your fingers crossed 😉

Mad times at The Party DJ Hampshire HQ

The last few weeks really have been mad times at The Party DJ Hampshire HQ!

It’s funny how some things take much longer than you expect and others just happen. I just wanted to get a quick post to tell you about a few things

I’ve also been planning my Autumn Wedding Fair campaign and I’m delighted to say you can see me at there events organised by The Hampshire Wedding Group. Fantastic new Courtyard Events venue at Moor Court Farm

Last Saturday I was one of the suppliers invited to take part in a showcase at the new Courtyard Events venue at Moor Court Farm, it’s absolutely fabulous!

I’ve known Michelle and Mark for a good few years now and have worked at many very successful weddings and events with them and their Finest Marquee Hire business. So I’m delighted to have been selected as one of their preferred suppliers at their beautiful new venue.

Everything looked fantastic on Saturday and there is still more to come as they continue with their plans to create, what I believe will be, one of the best wedding venues in the area. Among the other suppliers exhibiting on Saturday were my good friends, and fellow Hampshire Wedding Group members Toni from SpeedyPix and Antony from ABC Wedding Photography / Lightbox Studios.

Earlier this year Finest Marquee Hire provided the marquee for Bex and Alex wedding reception and this weekend I’m working with them again for a black tie dinner and party.

I’ve always loved marquee weddings with that outside/inside feel but this new venture offers so much more. This exciting new venue is located close to junction 2 of the M27 it’s well worth a look for anyone planning their wedding.

Maybe next year?

Sorry it’s been a few weeks since I posted a blog – maybe next year I’ll be more organised and focused! In my defence, there has been a lot going on behind the scenes!

In fairness, I have been busy writing my weekly “Love, Laughter & Happily Ever After” emails which has now been running for 11 weeks – if you want to receive it please email paul@thepartydj.co.uk – and there have been lots of meetings and work going on behind the scenes.

Normally at this time of year I go to the ProMobile Conference to recharge my batteries and find my focus for the year ahead. This year the Conference is “resting” to come back bigger and better in 2018. Of course back in April I attended and spoke at The ‘DJ Think Tank’ (click here to see my previous blog) and since them I’ve had a few ideas forming. Last week I met with Deon, my website designer, from Deon Design (click here) to run through a few things and, even as I write this blog, messages are going back and forth between us on developing and changing my site.

You may know that I’m a member of Toastmasters International, the Worldwide organisation set up to help people become more effective communicators and leaders. Last weekend the Toastmasters International District 91 (UK South) Spring Conference was held in Southampton so I took the weekend off to attend. The theme for the Conference was “The Mayflower ~ Discovering New Worlds” and the delegates were encouraged to follow in the steps of the Pilgrim Fathers and step out of our comfort zones and embrace change.

Among the speakers were Mike Storkey, the International President of TMI, who was born in Wales but emigrated to Australia many years ago and Jamaican born American Mark Brown who is a former World Champion of Public Speaking and is an Emmy Award nominated inspirational speaker. These two gentlemen were great examples of what can be achieved with the help of Toastmasters International. There were also many excellent workshops and presentations and I came away full of great ideas having made many new friends. To be honest, the only thing that disappointed me about the Conference was that more people didn’t take the opportunity to attend. It was local to me this time, just 5 miles down the road, but I got a lot from it so maybe next year I’ll go again.
