Recharging my batteries

I’m currently away recharging my batteries. 2017 has been a good year, sometimes challenging, sometimes sad, but overall I feel happy with what I’ve achieved and the decisions I’ve made. We didn’t get as much time away as we’d promised ourselves and so I decided not to take any Christmas party work this year and get some winter sun earlier than usual. So, for the second time this year, we’re in Fuerteventura.

Having said that, I’ve got 4G and a phone signal everywhere here so if you need me, or want to check a date, just get in touch.

While we’ve been here I’ve been catching up on various podcasts including Roifield Brown’s “F X V” (Friday 15. I was listening to his interview with Fil Callender on his his life in Reggae / Jamaican music and they played this wonderful track Heatwave ~ “Mind Blowing Decisions” (this TOTP version unfortunately doesn’t include the full intro 🙁 )

To listen to the podcast click here – it’s episode 27

Yesterday I spent a very enjoyable hour recharging my batteries in one of my favourite bars The Coco Beach Lounge. Playing in the background was an Eryka Badu playlist, here’s one track I just had to Shazam ~ “Window Seat”. I liked it because it had a fabulous chilled groove – the video brings it to another level. I know that I’m a tune and vibe man – that’s to say I don’t always listen to lyrics (especially at first) – but I certainly didn’t expect a video like this!

One of the highlights of 2017 for me was seeing Ian Hunter, one of my heroes from the 70’s. I actually did a print of Ian for my art A level! He was the front man of Mott The Hoople and a solo start in his own right. I finally got to see him for the first time a few months ago at The Engine Rooms and he didn’t disappoint. For a man who celebrated his 78th birthday a few days earlier he looked amazing in a black Fred Perry polo shirt and jeans – I hope I get another chance to see him. I picked his live album to listen to when I walked to the shops one evening. We may not have had as much time away as I’d have liked this year but we’ve seen some great shows which is also a good way of recharging my batteries.

Finally, for this post, I’ve been listening to another “Guilty Pleasure”… Desert Island Discs! Every episode is available as a download from the BBC Radio iPlayer. I decided to listen to the Kay Mellor episode from earlier this year as we’ve been enjoying her latest drama Love Lies & Records. Among her choices was Amy Winehouse’s version of “Our Day Will Come” which she uses as the theme music for the latest tv show. Rest in peace Amy.

I’m lucky, I have a job I love but I still need things to look forward to, so holidays and nights out are essential for me. Everybody has to recharge their batteries – make sure you do!

Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity Family Fun Day at The Chilworth Manor Hotel

Last Sunday was the Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity Family Fun Day at The Chilworth Manor Hotel.

Fun Day

The event was very well supported by local businesses and there were all kinds of things to see and activities to try out.

There was a bouncy castle, sumo arena and other activities supplied by Blake Entertainments, Oxygen Freejumping provided a big trampoline/bouncer and the team from My Coaching ran dodge-ball, mini-soccer sessions and various other sessions.

There were Fun Runs throughout the day, a treasure hunt, colouring, cake, sweets, children’s disco and Belinda with her hula-hoops!

The chefs from Chilworth Manor kept everyone fed with a burgers, hot dogs and bacon rolls.

Also hidden away in the grounds was Dan from Bushcraft UK who was telling people about lighting fires and how to camp safely. Dan also provided Hen and Stag packages! CLICK HERE to find out more.

We were also joined by a Chinese Dragon who danced around the activities bringing good luck and amazing super powers to everyone taking part in the activities.

I was set up on the rear terrace providing background music and trying to keep everyone informed of what was happening as the day went on. This also involved regular trips to the front of the hotel where the fun runs took place. I don’t know about everbody else but after 8 hours on site I was shattered! As I left I saw Harry Kazzam was (pictured below being carried around by a giant rabbit) was still doing magic tricks for a big group of children (CLICK HERE for more about Harry Kazzam).

Chilworth Manor is a fabulous venue for a wedding, my snaps don’t really do it justice, the grounds are beautiful and extensive. For more information about Chilworth Manor CLICK HERE

Among the mascots who spent the day playing with the children were Chase and Sky from Paw Patrol who were very popular and posed for numerous pictures and played with the little ones

Also supporting again were the very excellent SpeedyPix with the first outing of their new iPhone inspired Photo Booth. It created a lot of interest and Ann-Marie was very busy helping visitors with their photos. Please CLICK HERE to find out more about SpeedyPix.

Thanks to everyone involved in putting on the Family Fun Day (sorry I haven’t managed to mention everyone) and the hundreds of visitors who came to support the event, I’m looking forward to the next one!

Prom Fun

Travellers Rest

Today we played a lunchtime Prom for the leavers from Oak Lodge School at The Traveller’s Rest in Hythe. Oak Lodge is a specialist arts college catering for children aged 11 to 16 with special needs. This was the second time we’d been asked to play for the leavers party and it was lovely to share this special celebration again.

The Party DJ's

Once again Joe came along and did most of the hard work while I snapped a few pictures. It was great to see the sun shining as last year the weather wasn’t quite as nice.

prom limo

Two fabulous limo’s brought the VIP’s from school to the pub and a photographer from the Echo was on hand to take some pictures.

The team at Traveller’s Rest did a great job and transformed one of the bars where the children and their teachers enjoyed a lovely three course meal.

School Prom

Because it was a small party we just took the Bose Compact speaker which gave us more than enough volume. We also only used minimal lighting set to a slow fade across the colours as some of the guests don’t like flashing lights. Music played ranged from current hits like Robin Thicke and Daft Punk, to classic party dance tunes Cha Cha Slide and The Macarena, right through to Linkin Park and AC/DC! It was a great party and a lovely way to spend a Wednesday lunchtime.

Four Weddings US is back on the telebox. They are up to Season Three of the American show and this weeks looks like a cracker.

If you’ve never seen the show before it’s basically a look at 4 weddings (derrr!) and 4 Brides attend each others big day and score them for the venue, the dress, the food, and the overall experience. As I’m sure you can imagine they are all very nice to each other and never critical or down-right nasty!
